Worst Thing I've Done (11/3)

My cousins and I have always hung out the night of the super bowl. We both live in Garnet Valley so we are really close. My cousin Kylie is two years older than me. She was in 9th grade and I was in 7th grade. Her friends were getting together for the super bowl and having a party, but her mom told her that she had to stay home and hang out with her cousins and siblings. Kylie and I had never really watched the game. We usually just ate food and went upstairs to her room. We hung out for 2 hours from 5-7, but at 6:30 we were going to plan a sneak out.

For an hour and a half I listened to Kylie talk about how bad she wanted to go to this party. I understood, I wouldn’t want to be forced to stay home instead of hanging out with all my friends. So we made a plan and Kylie was going to sneak out. She couldn’t go through her back or front door and the basement door was where all the boys were. So she would go out her window onto her roof. The roof slanted down to the front of the house, where she would jump off and run to the neighborhood across the street to get picked up by her friend and her friend’s dad. She had to get picked up by her friend’s dad in the neighborhood across the street because if her parents saw a car pull into their driveway our plan would be ruined. Her friend told her after the party she could sleepover her house and then they could go to school together the next morning. Kylie knew that her parents would check on her sometime that night. So she planned ahead again. She texted her dad if she could sleepover her friends house. Her dad, not knowing she meant that night said yes. Kylie was set. If her parents got mad she would tell them she left to sleepover her friends house as they were saying bye to my parents because her dad allowed her to. If they got mad it was all just one big “miscommunication.” While she was gone, I would stay in her room with the music on. No one ever came upstairs during the football game. Until halftime.

As her mom knocked on the door my heart dropped. I opened up the door. She asked if we wanted desert, but stopped halfway to notice Kylie nowhere in the room. She then asked where Kylie was. So I had to think fast. I noticed the bathroom across from her room was closed with the lights on. So I lied. I told my aunt that Kylie was in the bathroom and we would be down soon. She said okay and walked back down stairs. My heart returned to its normal beat. I waited it out until the game started back up again and then went downstairs to get food to bring back upstairs for the “2 of us.” Everything was fine for now.

Kylie called me a little later and I told her what had happened. She thanked me and told me everything was going to be fine and she was right. Her mom never came back upstairs again. As I left I decided to leave the music on, which ended up being a good decision. My mom yelled upstairs to Kylie as we were leaving “Bye Kylie!” but when she didn’t get a response I blamed it on the loud music. My mom said okay and we walked out.

Kylie later followed up that her mom had texted her at 11 that night asking where she was. Kylie responded that her dad had given her permission to sleepover her friend’s house after “the cousins left.” Her dad was mad because he didn’t know Kylie was planning to sleep over her friends house that night. Her parents gave up and told Kylie they would talk the next day, but that never happened. Everyone seemed to just forget about it. So to this day the worst thing I have ever done is help Kylie sneak out and her parents never knew that she left at 6:30 when all her cousins were still there and we purposely tricked her dad!
